“Fantasy, folklore, and the realm of story provide children with the necessary tools for facing the world, understanding its ways and capriciousness, indeed, becoming truly human.”
Through fairy tales I learned that life has obstacles and those obstacles can be overcome. By luck and happenstance, I am drawn to a profession in which I tell the tales I loved as a child. Hansel and Gretel, The Laidly Wyrm of Spindlestone Heugh, and Rumpelstiltskin were among my favourites from the Book of Fairy Tales which still sits on my shelf (published 1956). I knew them off by heart. And that is how I tell, blended with songs, guitar, ocean drum, and most recently, the ukulele!
I have performed for concerts and festivals across Canada and in England. I tell for public and house concerts, schools, Family Literacy events, churches and museums. You can hear me at the Button Factory for Stories Aloud in Waterloo, A Different Drummer Books in Burlington, Fresh Stories in Cambridge and lots of other places!
My memberships include: Storytellers of Canada-Conteurs du Canada, The Baden Storytellers’ Guild, The Burlington Storytellers’ Guild, Hamilton Storytelling Circle, Storytelling Toronto, and The Uppity Women.
